New calculations from Amazon KDP’s royalty and printing-cost schedules show that a paperback listed at $9.98 earns $1.00 less per copy than the same book at $9.99, a cut of 39 to 72 percent depending on page count and ink.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – October 23, 2026 – An author who lists a 200-page paperback on Amazon.com at $9.98 earns $1.59 per copy. At $9.99, one cent higher, the same book earns $2.59, according to calculations published today by Harmony Publishing LLC using the current royalty and printing-cost schedules of Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).

The difference comes from a price threshold in the royalty schedule. Paperbacks listed at $9.99 or more on Amazon.com earn a 60 percent royalty, while those listed at $9.98 or less earn 50 percent. In both cases the printing cost is deducted from the author’s share, so the lower rate removes a larger proportion of what is left.

The effect grows as printing costs rise. A 200-page black-and-white paperback at a standard 6 by 9 inch trim costs $3.40 to print, and earns 39 percent less per copy at $9.98 than at $9.99. A 32-page children’s picture book printed in premium color at 8.5 by 8.5 inches costs $4.20 to print; it earns $0.79 per copy at $9.98 and $1.79 at $9.99, a difference of 56 percent. A 300-page black-and-white paperback, which costs $4.60 to print, earns $0.39 at $9.98 and $1.39 at $9.99, a difference of 72 percent.

In each case the gap is exactly $1.00 per copy, because the ten-point change in the royalty rate applies to the whole list price before printing is deducted. The smaller the margin left after printing, the larger that dollar is as a share of the author’s earnings.

Sales through Expanded Distribution, which places paperbacks with other retailers and libraries, earn 40 percent of the list price minus printing. At $9.99, the 200-page paperback earns about $0.60 per copy through that channel. At $12.99 it earns $1.80.

The company said the threshold matters most when authors set a first price. A price chosen to sit just under $10 can reduce the earnings on every copy sold without changing what the reader notices, and authors pricing several books in a series apply the same cut to each title.

The figures use KDP’s published schedule for Amazon.com: a fixed cost of $1.00 plus $0.012 per page for black-and-white paperbacks of 110 pages or more at regular trim sizes, and $4.20 per copy for premium-color paperbacks of 24 to 40 pages at large trim sizes. They exclude taxes and apply to Amazon.com only; other Amazon marketplaces use their own thresholds.
