Matangi and the Dasa Mahavidyas – New video from Maria Vyasa
Author Maria Vyasa has released a new educational video exploring Tara, one of the Dasa Mahavidyas from the Indian tantric tradition. It presents a unique way of connecting the ten wisdom goddesses with the six chakra system originated in the Kubjika School of Tantra. The video titled ”Matangi – Dasa Mahavidyas” draws from Vyasa’s 2024 book “Kundalini – a baptism of fire: The journey of the mystic.”
The Dasa Mahavidyas are a group of goddesses from the tantric tradition representing different wisdom aspects of the divine. The ten goddesses are Kali, Tara, Tripurasundari, Bhuvaneshwari, Bhairavi, Chinnamasta, Dhumavati, Bhagalamukhi, Matangi and Kamala. The video combines academic research with oral traditions from living goddess traditions as well as personal contributions to the symbology of the goddesses. Vyasa presents both established scholarly understanding and her own interpretations of the symbolic meanings. She explains how these goddess figures relate to the Kundalini process, a spiritual transformation described in yogic texts. “My main contribution is connecting the Dasa Mahavidyas with the six chakra system originated in the Kubjika School of Tantra, in a unique and comprehensive way,” Vyasa says in the video. This connection between the goddess tradition and the chakra system represents new ground in understanding these ancient teachings. Vyasa’s approach makes complex mystical concepts accessible while maintaining scholarly rigor.
Understanding Matangi
Matangi is connected to the spoken word, ”vaikari vac”. This is the creative word that started with Tara at its most supreme level; OM. Vyasa proposes, the level of the word connected to Matangi binds us to the transient world or becomes an expression of the supreme word into manifestation. Matangi´s name means ”she who’s limbs are intoxicated”, meaning intoxicated with passion. Matangis symbology, Vyasa suggests, fits well with Svadhistana chakra as the center of lust. Svadhistana is also connected to water; the element of fertility and creativity, other associations of Matangi. Matangi is connected to the conch shell and so is Kundalini because of it´s coiled form. Kundalini is said to be the coil produced by withdrawing all of the energies of the body (pancha vayus) to the navel area (kanda) where Svadhistana is located, Matangi on her way to liberation might be the making of this coil, retrieving the energy turned towards or into a world so that it may be turned towards the source and uniting with the source; desire turned upwards.In Matangis liberated state, Vyasa suggests, she is an expression of the supreme word and the voice of intuition; pratibha.

About Maria Vyasa
Maria is a practicing Psychotherapist with about two decades of experience. She has been a teacher of classical yoga and yoga philosophy for the same amount of time. She was born a mystic and had her earliest mystical experience at the age of five.
