2026 Custom Deck Design Trends: What Central PA Homeowners Are Asking For This Season

West Shire Decks, the family-owned, six-time award-winning deck specialist serving Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland, shares the deck design trends shaping new builds this year, from multi-level layouts to modern railing and integrated deck lighting.

As deck-building season hits its peak across Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland, West Shire Decks, the family-owned custom deck builder with locations in Dillsburg, Mechanicsburg, and Monkton, is seeing several clear design shifts shape the way homeowners are planning their new decks in 2026. After more than half a decade of building custom decks across the region and earning six consecutive Harrisburg Magazine “Simply the Best” awards in Home Improvement, the company is using this season’s project requests to highlight where deck design is moving.

Multi-level decks are the standout trend of 2026. Homeowners are increasingly asking for decks that move beyond a single flat platform, using two or three levels to create distinct zones for dining, lounging, and grilling. Multi-level designs work especially well on Central PA’s rolling lots, where natural grade changes can be turned into intentional design features rather than obstacles. Stepped transitions, built-in deck benches, and wider stair runs are all common requests inside these multi-level builds.

Modern deck railing is reshaping how new decks look from the street and from the backyard. Cable railing, glass panel railing, and slim aluminum railing systems have largely replaced traditional wood balusters on premium builds, opening up sightlines and giving decks a cleaner, more contemporary feel. For homeowners not ready to go fully modern, composite railing systems in matching deck colors strike a middle ground that still feels updated.

Board patterns and wider planks are giving deck surfaces a more architectural look. Picture-frame borders, herringbone insets, and inlay accent boards are showing up in more designs, particularly with composite and PVC products that hold their shape across long board runs. Wider-face composite boards, often 5-1/2 inches across, are being chosen over narrower options for the more substantial feel they bring to a deck surface.

Color trends are shifting too. While natural wood tones remain popular, homeowners are increasingly mixing two coordinated colors within a single deck, often a darker color for the border or accent and a warmer wood-tone color for the field. Driftwood grays, weathered teaks, and rich brown tones are leading the field, with bolder dual-tone designs appearing more frequently in new builds.

Integrated deck lighting has moved from luxury upgrade to expected feature on most new West Shire Decks projects. Post cap lights, riser lights along stair edges, and recessed deck lights set into railing posts and surface boards extend the usable hours of a deck and add real visual lift to a home’s exterior at night. Low-voltage LED systems are now standard, designed to last for the life of the deck.

“A deck used to be a flat surface. Now it is a designed space,” said a spokesperson for West Shire Decks. “Homeowners are coming in with very specific ideas about how they want the deck to look, how they want to move through it, and how it should feel at night versus during the day. Our job is to take those ideas and build them into something that holds up for the next thirty years.”

That shift has changed how the West Shire Decks team approaches the deck design process. Instead of starting with square footage, designers now begin with how the family expects to use the deck across seasons, what features matter most (multi-level layouts, railing style, lighting plan, board pattern), and how the deck should connect to the rest of the home and yard. Material recommendations and structural details follow from there.

“Trends are useful, but they are not the whole story,” the spokesperson added. “The decks we are proudest of are the ones that still look right ten years from now. We design for the long run, not just for what is hot this season.”
