Edward Falk Takes “Prepared at Home” Pledge to Strengthen Family Emergency Readiness

Retired Florida Fire Captain Edward Falk launches personal commitment to community safety after 30 years in emergency services.

Why a Firefighter Is Taking Action at Home

Edward Falk spent three decades responding to emergencies as a firefighter and paramedic in Florida. He taught EMT students for 16 years. He earned many state certifications and led teams as a Captain. But after retiring, he realized something critical: most families are unprepared for the moments that matter most.

“Emergencies don’t give you time to think twice. Training is what you fall back on,” Falk said. “Training isn’t just for firefighters. It’s for families.”

That belief has led him to launch the “Prepared at Home” pledge, a personal commitment to help families build the same readiness he relied on throughout his career.

“Service doesn’t stop when you retire,” Falk explained. “If I can help families prepare before something happens, that’s still service.”

The Reasoning Behind the Pledge

Falk’s decades on the front lines taught him that preparation saves lives. He saw firsthand what happens when families lack basic emergency plans, when smoke detectors fail, when no one knows CPR.

“I knew early on I wanted to do something that mattered. Helping people in their worst moments felt like the right path,” he said.

Now he wants to bring that same urgency to everyday households across Florida and beyond.

“You never stop learning in this field. If you stop learning, you stop improving,” Falk noted. That principle applies equally to families preparing for hurricanes, fires, medical emergencies, or power outages.

His experience teaching future emergency responders at the local college reinforced the need for education beyond the firehouse. Falk believes the skills he taught to EMT students belong in every home.

Do It Yourself: 10 Actions Anyone Can Take

Falk encourages everyone to start with simple steps that require no special equipment or paid services:

  1. Draw a floor plan of your home and mark two exits from every room.

  2. Choose a meeting spot outside where everyone will gather after evacuating.

  3. Test all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms monthly by pressing the test button.

  4. Replace smoke detector batteries twice a year when you change your clocks.

  5. Keep a flashlight and whistle next to every bed.

  6. Fill empty milk jugs or bottles with tap water and store them in a closet for emergencies.

  7. Write down emergency contacts on paper and post the list on your refrigerator.

  8. Practice your evacuation plan with your family at least twice a year.

  9. Learn CPR by watching free instructional videos online and/or taking a class.

  10. Assemble a go-bag with copies of important documents, medications, and three days of non-perishable food.

Track Your Progress: 30-Day Challenge

Week 1: Map your home exits and choose a meeting spot. Test all alarms.

Week 2: Store emergency water. Write down and post emergency contacts.

Week 3: Assemble a basic go-bag with documents, medications, and snacks.

Week 4: Practice your evacuation plan with everyone in the household. Add flashlights and whistles to bedrooms.

By the end of 30 days, your household will be significantly more prepared than most families in your neighborhood.

From the Firehouse to the Community

Falk began his career in 1989 after completing fire academy training and EMT school. Over the following decades, he earned certifications as an EMT, Paramedic, Fire Officer, Hazardous Materials Technician, Instructor, Fire Inspector, and Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting specialist through extensive coursework at the Florida State Fire College.

In 2006, he was promoted to Captain, where he mentored younger firefighters and led emergency response teams. His final assignment before retiring was at an airport, where his specialized ARFF training proved invaluable.

“Leadership in the firehouse isn’t about rank. It’s about trust,” Falk said. He applied that same philosophy in the classroom, teaching EMT students at the local college for 16 years.

Now he is bringing that leadership to living rooms and kitchens across Florida.
