Entrepreneur and Working Mom Emily Busby Challenges the “Do It All” Myth in Debut Children’s Book, “Mommy’s Not an Octopus”

New Hampshire – Emily Busby’s debut book, Mommy’s Not an Octopus, is a loving wink to overwhelmed parents and a fun, relatable way to help children build empathy, patience, and pride in helping out, one hug (or tiny helping hand) at a time.

After navigating postpartum depression and anxiety through different seasons of motherhood, Emily emerged with a new mission: to challenge the pressure moms feel to do it all.

She was recently on CBS Boston to discuss how the book is meant to reach families, sharing that it’s, “to teach kids empathy and patience and giving back to your parents in small ways. Also by giving yourself a little grace as a mom.

Mommy’s Not an Octopus was born out of a chaotic, everyday family moment, but it carries a deeper message about navigating ‘mom guilt,’ identity after children, healing, and what a “village” really means.

“Amazing book, made me cry. What a beautifully written book! Literally brought tears to my eyes as the book’s message is so relatable. Can’t wait to read this to my little one.” – Mary Ann Barnum

The picture book gently shows children that their mother has a lot to handle but only has two hands. It encourages children to help where they can and teaches them that mommy has endless love, but not endless energy.

“This book is a physical manifestation of my own healing… a gentle permission slip to set down the unrealistic expectations I’ve carried since becoming a parent,” says Emily.

Mommy’s Not an Octopus can be found on Amazon and is available here.
